Synopsis PENNY SCROOGE

It is Christmas Eve and Penny Scrooge, a miserable but wealthy young woman, works in her restaurant with her cook and waitress Cratchet. Penny receives several visitors to the restaurant. The choir who come to entertain the customers, her cousin Tom who invites Penny to visit his Mother who is sick, and two young women who are collecting for charity, who Penny refuses to give anything to. Penny allows Cratchet just a few hours off for the evening, without pay, but insists she is to come in the following morning, which is Christmas day. That evening Penny is visited by the Ghost of Marlene, Penny’s friend and business partner, who died on Christmas Eve a few years earlier. Marlene warns Penny to change her ways, and tells her that three more spirits will visit her that night. The first spirit to visit her is the Ghost of Christmas Past and with it Penny revisits scenes of her earlier life, most of which are sad, which give Penny an insight into what she was like.

Penny tries to stop some of the images but the Spirit says that the images from the past cannot hear her. Penny finds herself back at home and falls into a deep sleep. The Ghost of Christmas Present awakes her. This spirit takes her to Cratchets house to see how they celebrate Christmas. She notices how very poor they are, and how frail little Rachel is. Then they visit the home of her Aunt where they still enjoy the annual party of charades which Penny used to enjoy so much. The final spirit is the Ghost of Christmas Future, a hooded phantom that doesn't speak. Penny fears this ghost most of all, but follows where it leads. The ghost reveals to Penny the gravestone of Rachel, where her poor Father kneels in grief. The spirit reveals another unkept gravestone and Penny reads her own name. Terrified Penny tries to promises the spirit that she will change her ways, she does not want to die with no one who cares enough to tend her grave. but the spirit ignores her and fades away.

Marlene visits Penny for the final time, and takes her to darkest, deepest hell. It is a terrifying place. Penny promises she will change if she is just given one more chance. Marlene tells Penny she cannot help her, Penny must help herself and the will to change must lye within her heart. Marlene leaves Penny. It is dark, and frightening as Penny pleads and cries out for help. Suddenly Penny finds herself back in her restaurant, and wonders if it was all a dream, until she finds some ivy that was across her gravestone, lying on the restaurant floor. From that moment on Penny changes from being a cruel, unkind miserly person, to someone who helps all. The Cratchet family, her Aunt, her cousin, even a long lost love, all benefit from the kindness of Penny Scrooge.
