The Story

The Earl of Hareford has died and various family members eagerly anticipate legacies in the absence of an heir. However, Parchester, the family solicitor, has tracked down the heir to the vast fortune and the family seat of Hareford Hall - Bill Snibson, a barrow boy from Lambeth.

Overcoming the initial shock, and in spite of advice from the fellow executor of the will, Sir John Tremayne, to 'pay him off' Maria, Duchess of Dene, is determined to mold Bill into a true Hareford Gentleman. She also tries to marry him off to his cousin Lady Jaqueline, who is eager for the title and the money, but Bill is determined to marry his Lambeth sweetheart Sally Smith. Trying to convince Bill that he is now too good for her she invades his 'coming out' party with her rowdy friends, but everyone - the Duchess included - joins in the fun of the Lambeth Walk.
